Intense colors most likely initially attract attention to the works of Helmut Kand, which consists of deep blue skies and seas, lush green vegetation, yellow, orange and brown for face, body architecture and landscape and hidden symbolism. Like a polychrome kaleidoscope the multi-color human world full of emotions and dreams reveals itself. Kand extends the horizon to an own surreal universe that has a story line full of desires, anguish and pain, as well as of deeply perceived lust and love, where metamorphosed figures enjoy themselves in an orgasmic way. The world of Kand never has the theme of violence but reveals immanent and invariable lust. Every area of life is developed by Kand in a creative way and different objects have been decorated from facades of buildings to the feminine body. Especially should be referred to the flat and double sided decorated wooden figures which can be more than 2 meters high, that represent to each other devoted half goddesses that partially seem to move in a dancing pose and bring to mind the shadow theatre of Thailand. Kands paintings feature multiple layers and zones that consist of landscape, sea surface and active skies, where imaginary events take place or are in limbo beyond. His illustrated dream formations have a strong momentum and emanate intense energy and eventually seem to overflow the boundaries of the painting. Hence the works of Kand have a distinctive form of art called Kand's Poetic Surrealism, distinctive from Surrealism at least in its doctrinaire form as well as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Starting from a few realistic objects an entire cosmos is created featuring dream formations and dreamlike encounters, whereas the resulting finished work is created spontaneously and evolves during the act of painting. The works of Kand are enchanting with oscillating sentiments, emotions and richness of ideas and last but not least with poetic and lightweight titles such as: „Days of Thyme in a Fragrant Garden“, „The Gardener's Love for Symmetries“, „A Woman's Hair is Stronger Than a Bells Rope“, „Wardrobe for Abandoned Dreams“, etc. |
